According to reports in today's Sunday Mirror, Man Utd are already targeting a world-class replacement for Louis van Gaal - and may not wait until the end of his contract to get rid of him. The Mirror claims that the Old Trafford executives, keen to re-establish Man Utd as a pre-eminent force in global football, are looking towards Pep Guardiola to replace van Gaal just two years into his three-year contract, citing Guardiola's availability at the end of the season as the main drawing factor.

This would go against the proposed succession plan that Louis van Gaal has often suggested towards, where van Gaal would retire from football at the end of this contact at Man Utd, having built the squad and blooded in the youngsters, before Ryan Giggs takes the hotseat before the 2017-18 season. However, with the biggest managerial talent in football seemingly leaving Bayern Munich at the end of the season, Utd's boardroom may have to strike while the iron is hot, to prevent Guardiola taking over elsewhere - potentially at rivals Manchester City.
