Tottenham are lining up a surprise swoop for Real Madrid midfielder Asier Illarramendi, according to The Guardian, but will have to bat off interest from Liverpool who are also interested in bringing the Spaniard to the Premiership.

Despite being bought by Real Madrid for £23m in 2013, Illarramendi is currently surplus to requirements in Benitez's team, failing to even find a place on the bench during a 0-0 draw with Sporting Gijon at the weekend.

This has alerted a number of European clubs, who see the player as having far more potential than his current situation suggests.

Pochettino has made a defensive midfielder a priority before the transfer window closes, and has also targeted Southampton's Victor Wanyama as an alternative.
