The New 'New Thierry': Meet Spurs' New £16mil 18-year-old Target
Remember Hugo Viana?
No, not many of you. A small clutch of hands raised at the back.
Newcastle signed promising Portuegese midfielder Viana from Sporting Lisbon back when the player was 19 for €12million. He did practically nothing.
Spending big on a relatively untested youngster always looks good on the ol' forums but in reality, it's a path fraught with danger. For every Cristiano Ronaldo, there are ten Javier Saviolas - players with big reputations but little by way of real world, big league application.
Still, that risk hasn't deterred new Spurs honcho Pochettino who - according to our mates at talkSPORT - are chasing talented/untested 18-year-old Monaco forward Anthony Martial with a fee mooted to be around £15.8million. That's not chump change.
The player is clearly of a decent calibre but his two goals last term (albeit mostly as a sub) in a ludicrously poor league will hardly warm the cockles of Tottenham fans burnt by overpaying for mediocre players in the not-so-distant past.
Will the player they're dubbing the Next Thierry Henry prove different? We may soon find out.
