Chelsea have made Atletico Madrid's Antoine Griezmann a top target this summer and are ready to activate his £43.5m buy-out clause. However, Atletico want to make sure they have a suitable replacement in place first and are thus considering a bid for Spurs' Erik Lamela.
The Evening Standard report that Atletico are keen on Lamela and see him as the ideal replacement for Griezmann. The Argentinian hasn't really settled in North London since his move from Roma two summers ago. However, his talent is clearly highly regarded and Atletico may be a better place for the 23-year-old.
Griezmann is only one year Lamela's senior, but already making huge waves around Europe. His first season at Atletico was a huge success and therefore Atletico are very reluctant to let him go, but as per his buy-out clause, they can't really do much about it.
It seems that the only real losers in the situation are Spurs, who once again would be selling a big talent. It may suit Pochettino to overhaul the squad and really make it his own, but Lamela, the manager's compatriot, may not have been on the 'out' list, especially considering how much he's featured of late.
Chelsea will be licking their lips either way, as Griezmann and themselves hold all the power in this situation. What a signing he could be - a fantastic addition to an already formidable force.
