According to the Mirror, Liverpool scouts visited Rayo Vallecano's loss to Atleti to watch talented regista Saul Niguez and it's not hard to see why. Just look at the simple elegance of Niguez's performance against Italy's U19s for Spain: getting and giving, finding space with a spare elegance that lump-footed English DMs could only dream of.
To our eyes the player Niguez most brings to mind is Barcelona's divisive Sergi Busquets - a man who people love to hate, what with his quick feet, quicker brain and penchant for flopping about on the floor like he's just been sniped. While we haven't seen the 19-year-old Rayo man do much play-acting, the other raw components are certainly there and with reports suggesting that Lucas may be on his way out of Anfield, he'd look like the perfect replacement. Especially for Rodgers who likes a man who'll keep things ticking over - hence his insistence that Joe Allen continue to play through his difficult early Liverpool career, where other decidedly-woolier types on the terraces were calling for his tiny head on a platter.
With reports suggesting that United might beat Liverpool to the signing of Fernando, might they end up bagging a winner with Niguez? Rodgers better call Saul and arrange, or one of their rivals will get their first. You know... AGAIN.
