The fantasy football game Oulala have taken a look at the form of John Stones this season and he’s showing signs of improvement since making the move from Manchester City to Everton.
Last season Stones was the tenth best passer among Premier League defenders, but under Pep Guardiola he’s moved up to being the second best, for both the number of successful passes and pass completion.
While Stones has always looked classy on the ball, he’s often struggled with the defensive aspect of the game. This was particularly evident last season under Roberto Martinez at Everton, when he made a number of individual errors leading to goals.
This season’s stats show that Stones’ performance has improved in almost every defensive area, which is even more impressive when you consider that his numbers have gone up despite moving to a team that do less defending than he was used to at Everton.
That said, there’s still clearly room for improvement and Stones’ ability with the ball was put to the test in City’s last game against Spurs, as City struggled to cope with the pressing of Tottenham in a 2-0 defeat.
Everton will surely be looking to replicate these tactics when they face City on Saturday. How Stones copes against his former club will be a test of his development.
