It may just be a glorified hand inside a sock, but puppets have proved themselves to be some of the greatest entertainers to appear on British telly. We can talk about the snarling punk majesty of Zippy – a rugby ball with attitude. We can talk about the refined wit and wisdom of Basil Brush whose tweedy act has been shamefully stolen by Stephen Fry. Or how about the deadpan genius of little Gordon the Gopher who could convey more in one scrunched up face than the cast of Made in Chelsea have managed in three series.That’s not even to mention the out of this world anarchy of Zig and Zag. Or the sleazy charms of a GMTV rat called Roland. Let’s give them a hand.
