One of the most infamous films in Hollywood history, the Western tale of a famous cattle war helped end the decade of director indulged '70s, closed a studio by being over-budget, and swung perception of Michael Cimino from being one of the best directors of his time to one of the most unmanageable. Despite having made The Deer Hunter, which had won the Oscars for Best Director and Best Film in 1979, Cimino's reputation was shattered after he delivered the finished film four times over budget with a running times of five and a half hours.
In retrospect, what’s clear is Cimino hadn’t really come in over-long and over-budget, he’d actually invented the modern box set. We saw the film many years ago and thought the eye for detail was fantastic; we’d rather have the over-long work of a visionary than some mainstream bullshit like Titanic. In fact, a modern re-appreciation has now led many to claim the film, which stars Christopher Walken, Kris Kristofferson and Jeff Bridges, to be the director's masterpiece.
