Lawrence Watson – The World Is Yours,
Hardback Retrospective

by Keith Wildman
4 September 2010

Lead singer Paul Weller was so inspired by Lawrence Watson’s photographs that he scrapped the planned artwork and replaced it with Watson’s.

What started out as a snatched session photographing The Style Council during the recording of their Confessions of a Pop Group album in the early 80s, was to become the springboard that launched the career of one of Britain’s most talented music photographers. Watson went on to photograph Weller to this day, creating iconic album cover images and working as his tour photographer. The World is Yours Brings together these photographs along with Watson’s other work in hardback for the first time. The book is a gripping photographic journey from the origins of hip hop in New York capturing Run DMC and Public Enemy at their peak, to the Britpop explosion with Oasis, Blur and Ian Brown via icons such as Morrissey, Bowie and Grace Jones. Launched in conjunction with Adidas due to the featured artists’ clear love of the 3-Stripes, the book is available now.
