Budget airlines have changed the world. How else could we get a 3.42am flight to Bratislava for £17.99? And it’s not just the exotic destinations it has unlocked, it’s the whole experience of no-frills flying. It’s the adventure of on-line booking, dodging those tick boxes and hidden charges like Indiana Jones in a cave system. It’s the challenge of cramming two-weeks’ worth of clobber into a bag the size of a cereal box. It’s the pioneering spirit of travelling on a plane where the seats and toilets are treated as guilty pleasures. It’s the moorish indulgence of paying £7.50 for a packet of crisps and bottle of water.
And then when you finally arrive, you find that you’re not actually in Bratislava - but a small airfield on the ‘outskirts’. No problem, it’s just a short hop away, about five-hours in a bus.
