A drug dealer (Riz Ahmed) and his callow friend spend a night dodging crazed addicts, dealing hard drugs & evading double crosses in lesser known British crime treat SHIFTY at 11:30pm on BBC2
Blending absurdist humour, slapstick, Pharisees’ religious philosophy ("What's this day of rest shit? What's this bullshit? I don't fuckin' care! It don't matter to Jesus") and more foul language than a week in Essex ("God damn you Walter! You fuckin' asshole! Everything's a fuckin' travesty with you, man! And what was all that shit about Vietnam? What the FUCK, has anything got to do with Vietnam? What the fuck are you talking about?"). The Big Lebowski manages to create something very rare in cinema- Intelligent, inspiring, elegant comedy with a broad ranging twisty-tight plot that ultimately steams from a minor character urinating on a the wrong man’s rug.
And as if that wasn’t enough, The Coen Brothers fortify what is already an exceptional film with layers of nuanced humour and genuinely moving character arcs such that after ten viewings you will still pick up on inside jokes and bizarre, understated character quirks as well as the strange labile nature of the world they create seeping into the eccentric characters who inhabit it’s bewildering social ecosystem.
Is The Big Lebowski the greatest film ever made? Maybe.
Is it as close to cinematic perfection as we have ever seen? Certainly.
So grab your dressing grown, pour yourself a White Russian and settle in for the most anarchic, engaging and entertaining film you will ever see, well- this week at least. THE BIG LEBOWSKI plays at 9pm on ITV4
Brainwashed through sex with a giant blue cat, a soldier embraces terrorism & leads a mutant animal army to kill in the name of a magic tree. Jim Cameron’s visually stunning Sci-Fi spectacular AVATAR plays at 9pm on Film4. So why not join us for a drunken, rambling tweet along on twitter at #avatarTFT
An aurally immersive & visually luscious Korean treat as an elderly woman attempts to prove her simple son’s innocence after he is (possibly) falsely charged with murder. The unlikely detective film MOTHER plays at 11:05pm on Film4
Notably, one of the primary influences for the Coen Brother’s Big Lebowski, as well as a great piece of classic noir in its own right. Humphrey Bogart’s hard drinking, heavy smoking, fast talking shamus detects his way round 1940’s LA, fighting gangsters, solving mysteries & sweet talking the dames along the way in- THE BIG SLEEP at 4:40pm on TCM
