Saturday 24th November
Blending absurdist humour, slapstick, Pharisees’ religious philosophy ("What's this day of rest shit? What's this bullshit? I don't fuckin' care! It don't matter to Jesus") and more foul language than a week in Essex ("God damn you Walter! You fuckin' asshole! Everything's a fuckin' travesty with you, man! And what was all that shit about Vietnam? What the FUCK, has anything got to do with Vietnam? What the fuck are you talking about?"). The Big Lebowski manages to create something very rare in cinema- Intelligent, inspiring, elegant comedy with abroad ranging twisty-tight plot that ultimately steams from a minor character urinating on a the wrong man’s rug.
And as if that wasn’t enough, The Coen Brothers fortify what is already an exceptional film with layers of nuanced humour and genuinely moving character arcs such that after ten viewings you will still pick up on inside jokes and bizarre, understated character quirks as well as the strange labile nature of the world they create seeping into the eccentric, verbose characters who inhabit it’s bewildering social ecosystem.
Is The Big Lebowski the greatest film ever made? Maybe.
Is it as close to cinematic perfection as we have ever seen? Certainly.
So grab your dressing grown, pour yourself a White Russian and settle in for the most anarchic, engaging and entertaining film you will ever see, well- this week at least. THE BIG LEBOWSKI plays at 9pm on ITV4 (Repeated Tuesday 27th at 11:05pm on ITV4)
