It’s the only kingdom to not be conquered by the Targaryens

Unbent, Unbowed, Unbroken. When the big conqueror Aegon I Targaryen went around laying siege to the world of Westeros with his three dragons and unifying the Seven Kingdoms, the Dornish were the only folk who didn’t even up with their arses handed to him. Rather than meet the Targaryens on the battlefield and ending up barbecued, the Dornishmen instead relied on guerrilla warfare, using hit and run tactics to irritate the Targaryens into leaving. While they would eventually join the seven kingdoms about 200 years later through marriage, the Dornish are a proud bunch of soldiers, known for their crafty and unorthodox techniques. Snappy house words too.

It’s a place of easy loving.

In Westeros they name their kids differently. Rather than take their pappy’s surname or rock a double barrelled moniker, kids born out of the wedlock instead take a surname based on the region they’re born in. Bastards in the North are called Snow, those in the Vale are called Stone and Dornishfolk are take the surname Sand if they’re born “on the wrong side of the sheets”. And there are a LOT of people in Dorne with the surname Sand. Dorne is one of the most progressive places in Westeros – women have equal rights in inheritance law and mistresses and paramours are common. Dorne people like to take it easy.
