Liverpool: Meet The Australian With A Brilliant Name You Need To Sign

Life’s not easy when you’re a footballer with a positive adjective for a surname.

The pressure heaped upon your shoulders as you lace up those boots for the first time is one which would crack even the toughest personality.

Luckily, like his positive adjective surname forefathers Danny Invincible, Raheem Sterling and, erm, Leon Best (?), Australia’s bearded wonderkid Josh Brillante is actually pretty handy with a ball at his feet.

In fact, more often than not, those adjectives prove pretty accurate. Ain’t that right, Danny Shittu, Damien Duff and Kieron Dyer?

Anyway, back to Brillante. The Newcastle Jets’ holding midfielder has been delivering some standout performances for the Young Socceroos, and was even drafted into the Senior squad last campaign.

He has been attracting glances from the northern hemisphere, too - with Lazio, Schalke and Everton all keeping tabs on his progress.

But Liverpool have been looking a little light in the middle third all season, and Brendan Rodgers could steal the starlet from under the nose of his Toffees counterpart, Roberto Martinez.

With Lucas Leiva and Joe Allen co-habiting the treatment table, and effervescent skipper Stevie Gee having had to do much more running than his 33 year old legs will be happy with, the Reds have found their backline under the cosh time and time again - and Brillante would be the perfect option to fill that hole.

Arguably, with Gareth Barry enjoying a new lease of life in the blue half of the city and set to make his move permanent, Liverpool’s need for an energetic stopper is greater than that of Everton.

Australia’s World Cup squad deadline might come a little too soon for the industrious midfielder, but with his profile growing and more European sides taking interest, perhaps Brendan Rodgers should look down under for the next piece in his jigsaw.

Hope not. Having lived in Australia for the past decade, I've seen bits and pieces of the A-league. The general quality of play is poor, and especially when compared to the BPL. Liverpool are close to qualifying for the CL, are in reasonably good financial health and do not need to gamble on players from inferior leagues. It would probably be a much better option for a player like Brilliante to move to a smaller European club to make sure he actually gets playing time. If he does well, he can then work his way up to a bigger club. Iago Aspas is a good example of Liverpool buying a player who was a big fis from a small pong (Although Celta Vigo being in La Liga still means most of its players will dwarf those from the A-League in quality). Aspas was the best of the layers in Celta, but it is a hard sell to see him playing CL football next season. It is even harder to see an A-league player make that step up.

The reason we are increasing the capacity at Anfield is so that we can accommodate all the players this site keeps saying we are linked with or should buy.

he'd probably pick the ball up and start running with it.
