Chris Moon's A Splendid Isolation

by Laura Dronfield
27 March 2014

London-born artist Chris Moon opens his 3rd solo exhibition in Shoreditch, running from the 28th March- 6th April.

The exhibition, titled A Splendid Isolation, narrates Moon’s journey through the West Coast of America and captures the mix of emotions he felt during the experience.

Moon’s travels through Venice Beach, San Diego, Death Valley, Joshua Tree, LA and Las Vegas were intended to be the main inspiration the exhibition, but it was the injury he sustained on the first day that leads the body of work. He used both his marvel of the beautiful scenery and his feelings of solitude and isolation to create the works.

A Splendid Isolation delves into our preconceptions of the West Coast and uses them against Moon’s experiences, where he uses his fervid style to tell his own story of the beautiful landscape. He uses his own very British identity to break away from out preconceived ideas, and looks past the stereotypical beauty of the Golden State and instead finds beauty within an isolated landscape.

The exhibition includes an array of atypical American landscapes, Art Deco architecture and townscapes, all carried out in Moon’s traditional re-worked, re-painted strokes.

Moon’s distinctive style is a result of his own obsessive investigations and exploration into his medium of choice, oil paintings, as opposed to any sort of traditional art schooling. His first 2 solo exhibitions received both commercial and critical acclaim and sold out, with many paintings entering sought after private collections worldwide.

The exhibition is curated by Gilly Fox and is held at the new gallery space at Forge & Co on Shoreditch High Street, open 10am- 7pm.
