Sherlock Holmes Crimes and Punishments is an ace detective game you should definitely pick up. Show Downey Jr, Cumberbatch and the rest how it's done...

Sherlock Holmes, one of the most definitive and well-known fictional detectives of our time. The works of Arthur Conan Doyle delivering to us a whole new way of thinking, of cerebral investigation, deduction, brains over brawn. Does Sherlock Holmes Crimes and Punishments released by Deep Silver let you explore this? Actually yeah, it really does, this game is fun as fuck.

For those of you uninitiated to the character, Sherlock Holmes was a rather eccentric detective, through his powers of deduction he could read any situation, any person, though this from time to time left him isolated from normal society. Nevertheless he lives for the chase, for the challenge, and in this game, you get to use all of his not inconsiderable talent to find any cases culprit, their motive and their method. Released on the Unreal 3 engine, this is a decent looking one to boot.

The game is split up into six riveting cases of murders to thefts, in this game you choose the culprit from a selection of many, as well as their fate as well. If you think someone was justified in their actions, you can let them go, but on the flip side, if you incriminate someone who is innocent, that’s on your head, and you have to deal with the fallout.

Lucy Liu And The Changing Face Of Sherlock Holmes

Gameplay consists of third person crime scene investigation and clue gathering (Think Sherlock Holmes meets LA Noire with less creepy face animations.) Each and every item you pick up adds to your portfolio of characters, evidence and web of deduction. This web is a rather unique mechanic, combining pieces of evidence, linking them with logic adds to your web, but your own deductions and thoughts can lead to completely different circumstances. One of the great things about this game is that sometimes things seem incredibly simple, but finding one piece of evidence turns all of your prejudices and all of the deductions you have made so far on their head.

Another brilliant aspect of this game is that every case has its own form unique investigation to keep things fresh, you want to see if someone can make a knife out of silver? Jump on over to your chemistry table and start melting it down, making a mould out of broken pieces, you don’t think its possible to throw a harpoon through someone? Get over to the butchers, and bring your spears because this is SCIENCE.

The voice acting in this game is pretty good too, with Sherlock & Watson‘s characterisations stealing the show, and great chemistry between them too. There are many other things that we could refer to in this game, like how it’s cool that the loading screens actually allow you to take the time to go through all of your evidence and deductions, how Sherlock’s voice changes whenever he puts a costume on, and how you can choose whether or not a culprit is justified in their actions, but there’s only so much we can write without ruining the game.

The only negative notes that were worth mentioning are that the controls can feel a little blocky at times, and when it comes to the case deductions, you will likely end up making the right one. Throughout every case we only got one wrong at the end, it seemed a little obvious sometimes.

In terms of our final deductions, this game is definitely worth grabbing, with great unique varied gameplay, replay ability from seeing the different case endings available, and the ability to check how your deductions were coming along, this is a great piece and a pretty nifty way to boost confidence in your judgement skills too.  It’s definitely worth picking up, it shouldn’t be a question at all. After all, it’s elementary my dear Saboteurs.
