Hiddink? Van Gaal? Cantona? Who Should Replace Moyes at Man United?

Well…that’s that then.

Some nine, painful months after his arrival, David Moyes has been swiftly ushered out of the Old Trafford exit - dumped by a tweet.

Let’s be honest, it’s been coming for a while, but now that it’s actually happened, you have to feel, well, kind of, sorry for the bloke.

Ageing and under performing players, a massive Sir Alex Ferguson-sized shadow and a pair of pretty uneventful transfer windows left Moyes with something of a thankless task - and one thing’s for sure, whoever takes the reins next has a big job on their hands.

But who will step into the sad-faced Scotsman’s shoes? Well, here are the frontrunners to lead Man United back to the big time..

Jurgen Klopp

The angry Borussia Dortmund coach has injected a real passion and intensity into the Schwarzgelben, something that United have massively been lacking of late. Has made no secret of his desire to manage in the Premier League, and is certainly capable - his side has been tearing it up both in the Bundesliga and on the continent, even though rivals Bayern Munich have made a habit of snatching his best players. 7/10

Diego Simeone

Ex-dogged and tough tackling midfielder turned tactical genius, the Argentinian is currently weaving his magic down at the Vicente Calderon Stadium, where his Atletico Madrid side have been turning in some eye-catching performances on their way to the top of La Liga and the semi-finals of the Champions League. Unlikely to be seeking a move from the Spanish capital at the moment, but if his best players are sold from underneath him this summer, could have a change of heart. 5/10

Ryan Giggs

Make no mistake, the hairy chested wing wizard is a United legend - but whether he can replicate his on-pitch impact off it remains to be seen. Giggs has the advantage of a trial period in the hot seat until the end of the season, and if he can grind out a few wins then that will help his bid for the top spot, but perhaps the Reds require more experience and managerial nous right now, to steady the ship after a turbulent season. 6/10

Louis Van Gaal

Set to take his Holland side to the World Cup this summer, the ex-Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss certainly has the CV to turn heads in the north west. At 62 years old, he is probably as close to Fergie in terms of top-level experience, attitude and temperament as United could get - and that makes him potentially the perfect remedy to their recent ills. 8/10

Steve Bruce

Why not? After all, he is a progressive, relatively young English manager who knows the club inside out. Having endured Jekyll and Hyde stints at several clubs including Norwich, Sheffield United and Wigan Athletic, the squashed-nosed geordie has found his feet at Hull City, and after leading them to the Premier League promised land, has also landed them in the FA Cup Final next month. Might be worth an outside bet - especially if his Tigers can lift the trophy. 6/10

Laurent Blanc

The PSG boss has long been linked with a move away from the City of Love, but appears likely to sign a new contract at the Parc des Princes this week, following their league and cup wins this season. Has strong links to Old Trafford following 48 appearances in Red during the twilight of his illustrious career, during which United fans dubbed him ‘Larry White’. 7/10

Eric Cantona

United fans would no doubt love ol’ perky collar to return to the north west, but whether he could cut it in the hot seat is a different matter altogether. Currently working as a Director of Soccer at New York Cosmos, Cantona has been heavily involved in politics back in his native France and would certainly represent a brave choice for the United board, who, frankly, can’t afford to gamble on this appointment. As the French would say, ‘improbable’. 4/10

Guus Hiddink

Out of work Guus might be the most easily obtained of all the candidates discussed so far. Most recently at Anzhi Makhachkala, the Dutchman is one of the most experienced and respected bosses around, and has experience of the Premier League following a brief tenure at Chelsea. His appointment would be a pretty safe one for the Old Trafford hierarchy, but it’s hardly progressive, is it? 7/10

iRed 10:39 am, 22-Apr-2014

Wait until the end and get Guardiola

Brian 10:39 am, 22-Apr-2014

What about Giovanni Trapattoni? He won a fair amount of Italian titles and European trophies and took a bunch of Irish no hopers to the Euros.

Willia Joachim 11:00 am, 22-Apr-2014

we are tired with Moyes even if ferguson won't be happy we want Kloop to replace him as soon as possible!

Che 2:31 pm, 22-Apr-2014

Joke of a club. Ask Rooney who he wants because he seems to be in charge over there.

bruce 2:47 pm, 22-Apr-2014

Why the fuck should we feel sorry for Moyes -- he just got £10 mill for that shite.

Alex Woo 3:04 pm, 22-Apr-2014

Steve Bruce? Progressive? Amnorravintha!

nothing but miracles will need to be performed by the next man in charge. he is going to have to get performances out of some bang average players. there is so much blame being hurled around, i've not heard the fans get any blame, they've had 25 great years, some were born into the glory years and have no concept of failure. unless the new boss gets a beautiful tune out of the likes of evans, Rafael, young, cleverly, fletcher, fellani, carrick, wellbeck, then i'm afraid united will be looking for a new coach a year from now.

The whole setup is a house of cards.Ferguson kept the whole thing afloat spending fractions of his competitors whilst the yanks creamed off the profits. The whole economics isn't sustainable. Shit loads of debt, profits diverted to investors & expectations of dining at the top table without spending,. All that matters is the share price & the brand. Time to get the Norwich scarves out again.

These sort of jobs end up being like a poison chalice, bit like the england job. Expectation will always remains high while the constant failures cause a regular turnover of boss...

mano 71 8:16 am, 23-Apr-2014

but che,how will they have over 100 million to spend in the summer.moyes spent about 70 million, how are they still able to spend this huge amount of money ?

Che 12:39 pm, 23-Apr-2014

Mano mate. The share sale raised over £200m for re investment in the squad. I suppose its still there.the yanks hold class B shares which enable them to take most of the profits to keep or distribute to their own investors. Class A shares which the mugs bought are only worth 10% of class B. So the mugs are subsidising the yanks all ways up.they dont have any clout or control. Forbes recently advised investment in Man Utd is not a viable investment. I would buy shares in the Norwich scarf sellers instead.

Adam 3:33 pm, 23-Apr-2014

Ferguson is not a god, if he could get the best out of this squad with 11 points to spare, I'm sure another manager can do the same, as long as he has a good footballing brain.

Stan Dalglish 1:55 pm, 24-Apr-2014

It does not matter who they get, just as long as you run it past you know who. I always thought no one person was bigger than the club? He's like Grange Hill bully who won't go away.

Che 2:14 pm, 24-Apr-2014

It was Gripper Stephson stan. No one has a chance with old shittyarse rattling his chains around upstairs like Jacob Marley.

mano 71 3:45 pm, 26-Apr-2014

hello I see the penny still hasn't dropped has it. statement from everybodies least favourite pensioner this morning "ryan is a natural for this job,he has the drive and the will to succeed,he could make it his long term" now if you still cant see through this man then you need x ray specs.FOR THE HUNDRDTH TIME. HE DOES NOT WANT A MANAGER WHO COULD SURPASS HIS RECORDS OR WIN THE EUROPEAN CUP,HE WANTS AN INEXPERIENCED MANAGER WITH A MODEST RECORD AND IN GIGGS HE MAY WELL HAVE FOUND HIS BOY. I just pray united have a great end to the season, LOUIS VAN GAAL HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH JUST AS IF.

mano 71 4:21 pm, 26-Apr-2014

looks like theyl have to build a runway parallel to old Trafford so these protest planes can land before they finaly realise that ferguson is the problem. after all that wine he"s drunk over the years, inside his head must look like a tic tac bobbing up and down in a sea of vitage red. go on fergie lad ruin the bastards.
